KIRCHER  &  THE  WORLD   SYSTEMS
Dr Robert A. Hatch - University of Florida

One of the best informed opponents of the 'Copernican' heliocentric model was Athanasius Kircher (1601/2-1680), a German-born polymath who wrote forty-four books on topics ranging from astronomy and mathematics to magnetism and hieroglyphics.  The above illustration is derived from his Iter extaticum coleleste of 1660 (p.37).  It shows six different world systems representing geocentric, heliocentric, and geo-heliocentric variations.  The top left diagram illustrates the model of Ptolemy, followed by five other schemes, the Platonic, Egyptian, Tychonic, Semi-Tychonic, and finally, the Copernican system.  For a larger view and more detailed discussion of Kircher's diagram Click Here.
