EUH 5934 - The High Middle Ages

Fall 2014

Dr. Nina Caputo

This course will survey key sources, themes, strategies of periodization, methodologies, and historiographical debates in the study of the “high middle ages” in western Europe. In particular, we will consider the political, institutional, cultural, religious, and intellectual markers historians have identified as indicative of the period since the birth of medieval history as a discipline of historical study until today. How and why has the “master narrative” of this period changed in recent years? In what direction is the field heading?

While becoming acquainted with major problems of high medieval history, you will learn to recognize different ways of posing questions; read and discuss the scholarly literature critically; gain skills in independent research; and present and your own work in both oral and written form.
