I do policy and practice relevant research in the context of theory.  Much of my research has concentrated on reactions to crime among the public, specifically fear of crime and gangs.  I also study fear of crime and gangs among criminal and juvenile offenders.  Increased understanding about the levels, causes, and consequences of  fear helps policy makers and justice system practitioners make informed choices about the best use of their limited crime-fighting resources and can improve quality of life among the general population.

I recently (July 2014) published a book with colleagues entitled: Fear of Crime in the United States: Causes, Consequences and Contradictions. (click on title for more information)

I also study the impact of reactions to crime among policymakers and practitioners. Specifically I conduct program evaluations of longstanding, new and/or innovative approaches to reducing crime. I also study the people who are affected by the juvenile and criminal justice systems.  As our incarcerated population remains in the millions and budgets continue to tighten, the justice system is in need of expert advice and research that can help improve the way it does its work.

In early 2018, our new book Encountering Correctional Populations: A Practical Guide for Researchers (with Kate Fox and Susan Turner) will be published by Univerisity of California Press.
