Biography

Elinore L. Fresh, M.A., 1990; ABD, University of Hawaii, is currently a Master Lecturer in Chinese in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Florida and has been teaching at UF since 1998.  Elinore has taught all levels of Mandarin Chinese, Business Chinese, Chinese Culture and Chinese Literature courses. In addition to her teaching, Elinore alternates co-coordination of  the UF in Chengdu Program at SWUFE with her colleagues. Elinore also holds membership in several professional organizations both state and national such as, Florida Foreign Language Association; the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and the Chinese Language Teacher’s Association (CLTA). Elinore has been very active in community outreach activities working with local schools in developing and integrating Chinese language and culture into the curriculum. As an active member (1996-2012) of the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association, she was also part of both in-bound Chinese delegations and out-bound delegations to China. Prior to her teaching career, Elinore lived in Taiwan for ten years, Egypt for four years and Yingkou, Liaoning Province, China for one year. While living in Taiwan, Elinore had the opportunity to travel to Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Growing up abroad, immersed in very different cultures, made Elinore keenly aware, at an early age, that effective communication rested in both linguistic and cultural competence, with knowledge of culture being paramount.

Course Development

  • Spring 2008-Chinese Business Culture-Introduced a one-credit course funded by UF CIBER during Summer 2009 will be developing this course into a three-credit course to be offered Fall 2009.
  • Spring 2009 will be working with DOCE (Division of Continuing Education) to create an online version of the Chinese Business Culture course.
